We represent walking for all Queenslanders

National Road Safety Week May 11 – 18 2025

It’s National Road Safety Week 2025 and the theme this year is ‘Drive so others survive’. It’s a powerful message and one that at Queensland Walks we consistently walk, talk and advocate for safe roads every day and at all times of the day.

Sadly in 2023, 158 Australians lost their lives whilst walking, and another 2,334 people were hospitalised or are experiencing ongoing injuries from road trauma – many who represent our most vulnerable community members. Crashes are avoidable, and it’s our role as a driver to drive safely.

National Road Safety Week (NRSW) is a reminder for all drivers to be more mindful, particularly near school catchments, shopping and sporting precincts, and  around neighbourhood centres. The NRSW website provides an opportunity for drivers to understand and make a pledge to:

  • slow down
  • remove distractions
  • understand the road rules, and
  • drive as though loved ones are on the road ahead.

So far, more than 75,000 pledges have been made. To add your road safety promise, visit the NRSW site here.

Community Road Safety

How are you travelling?

Did you know that walking to school with your kids can help reduce congestion in and around the school gate, and help improve road safety? Walking can also help to provide cleaner air for our kids to breathe.

The Other side

We’ve been working with Queensland school kids and drivers to bring awareness to some key Queensland road rules, so that kids can travel safely to and from school with confidence. Do you know the rules?

Safe streets for walking now!

The Queensland Walking Alliance developed the ‘Safe Streets for Walking Now’ Call to Action for road safety. The aim is to ensure that all Queenslanders have access to comfortable, convenient and safe spaces for walking and to promote safe driving.
