Taking the first step

When my husband, Chris, and our family moved to our new house, we decided that move would be the catalyst to do more exercise. We both work full-time and our days are very busy, but we knew that it was important that we make time for some physical activity. We’re not “gym people” so deciding to spend an hour each morning walking around our new neighbourhood seemed like a good idea.

At first, getting up an hour earlier each morning seems like a big ask, but we decided that one hour less sitting in front of the television each night was the obvious way to go.

Ok, so on our first week we didn’t spend an hour walking! Our neighbourhood is a little bit hilly and we were both a little bit out of condition, so our first few walks were more like 30 minutes. After a while, however, we got into the swing of things and now we regularly walk an hour or more.

In summer, we have sometimes found it more convenient to go walking in the evenings. This also provides the opportunity for our teenagers to come along, and “opportunity” they are beginning to enjoy despite themselves.

We really enjoy our walks now. We feel more energetic and sleep much better. And we now our new neighbourhood really well .
