We are thrilled to hear about a new program announcement from the Queensland Government. In February the Queensland Government announced the launch of the School Active Transport Infrastructure Pilot (SATIP). This announcement is welcomed, and we’re keen to see many Queensland schools benefit from safety upgrades to their schools.
At Queensland Walks, we know that the best way to encourage more students to walk or cycle to school is through safe infrastructure and higher levels of active transport investment. We understand that as a pilot project approach, the first pilot schools on the list will include Caloundra State School and Caloundra State High School being close catchments and we hope to see more schools funded in future.
This 12-month program aims to identify safe and connected infrastructure solutions by assessing the physical environment within a 2km radius of the schools. The pilot will help to better understand behaviours and attitudes toward active transport through upgrades to safe active transport infrastructure.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads, in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Sunshine Coast Council, will lead this initiative, with $3m being allocated to infrastructure improvements following the pilot.
Encouraging physical activity from a young age is crucial for long-term health. Regular exercise in childhood not only builds strong muscles and bones but also reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Not only is actively travelling to school good for health and wellbeing, it also improves the safety and congestion at the school gate, promotes strong communities and improves children’s ability to focus at school.
Queensland Walks has developed two successful Active Travel to School campaigns, thanks to the Community Road Safety Grants through Transport and Main Roads and in collaboration with a Queensland state primary school.

Queensland Walks has collaborated with Queensland school kids to help demystify the rules around giving way to pedestrians when turning into a side street. Think you know the rules? Let’s see if you’re right.
