Shelter is a basic human need, yet why don’t we see more effective shade and shelter in our public spaces – especially along designated walkways, bikeways and pedestrian commuter routes?  There’s no doubt that Queensland’s climate is beautiful, yet it sure gets hot and humid.  Well designed shady spaces encourage greater use of public facilities, active commuting, connectivity and importantly, reduce our exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. 

Join Louise as she discusses the ins and outs of effective shade for ultraviolet radiation protection for skin cancer prevention; for enabling greater physical activity through to building healthy resilient communities.  Louise will pose some challenges for us to all work together over the next few years to create a Queensland that is active, connected, healthy and above all, cool and covered.

Louise Baldwin is an innovative and passionate leader, researcher and consultant in health  promotion and healthy communities with a local, state, national and global reach.  Louise has been a leader in sun protection for more than two decades, leading some of the first shade creation  policy work in Queensland in the mid 90’s and being a tireless champion for the need for effective and accessible sun protection.  After decades in the nonprofit and government sectors managing  skin cancer and chronic disease prevention, she moved to QUT in 2016 to establish a leading shade and sun protective  apparel research program with her colleague Dean Brough.  Cool and Covered- designing out skin cancer in Australia  is now a national program building a suite of evidence and tools to enable shady, cool and healthy communities across Australia.  Louise works collaboratively with colleagues at the University of Southern Queensland to fulfill this ambition. Louise is a 2018 Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Trailblazer and co-editor of Health Promotion in the 21st Century: New approaches to achieving health for all.
