We represent walking for all Queenslanders

QWA Meeting 1 October 2021

Queensland Walking Alliance Meeting: 1 October 2021 11:30am

The Queensland Government published the state’s first walking strategy in 2019. The Queensland Walking Strategy 2019-2029 sets out a vision to make walking an easy choice for everyone, every day. This meeting of the Queensland Walking Alliance will feature presentations on two initiatives being rolled out by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to support that vision.

  1. New online Walking Network Planning Guidance

More people will walk when everyday destinations are connected by comfortable, direct, safe and accessible routes. Walking network plans (WNPs) are a first step to creating better places to walk. This guidance is designed  to help anyone working to improve conditions for walking to:

  • create an overarching walking network plan to achieve a safer, comfortable and more connected walking environment around destinations such as shops, schools and public transport stations
  • prioritise and plan works, budgets and funding schedules to implement improvements to walking environments.

In this presentation, you will get an overview of the guidance and learn how local governments and their stakeholders helped to test and refine the process.

  1. Smart Crossings

TMR is undertaking a Smart Crossings Project rolling out pedestrian on-crossing detector technology (OCD) at selected signalised intersections across Queensland. The OCDs can detect slower pedestrians and extend the pedestrian clearance time, providing a safety benefit by allowing vulnerable users to cross safely. This presentation will explain how the Smart Crossings sites are selected based on a number of criteria such as local pedestrian volumes, pedestrian generators, intersection configuration and constructability and how the project is rolling out at those selected intersections.

This invitation is open to all Queensland Walking Alliance members. Not a member? Contact Queensland Walks for more information on info(at)queenslandwalks.org.au
