Townsville Hike and Explore: North Creek – Cockatoo Creek August 5

NORTH CREEK/COCKATOO ROCK/COCKATOO CREEK
Leaving from the Alligator Creek Campground, we’ll hike our way down the Alligator Creek Falls trail towards North Creek. Along the way, we’ll cross a couple of creek lines, one of which may involve us getting our feet wet!
Once we reach North Creek, we’ll leave the trail & hike a ridgeline adjacent to the creek line. We will take some time and explore North Creek Falls which is one of the many highlights of this creek line. We will also visit a couple of lookouts I have found during past hikes, before heading for Cockatoo Rock.
From this point on, we will be treated to some beautiful views of the surrounding national park and adjacent areas as we make our way towards Cockatoo Rock.
Cockatoo Rock is a gigantic black granite boulder and offers the adventurer magnificent views out over the coastal plain, Joy’s Cliff, Cockatoo Creek and the Cockatoo Creek Valley.
Once we have taken in the views from the top of Cockatoo Rock and had some lunch, we’ll make our way down into Cockatoo Creek. We’ll follow Cockatoo Creek back to where it intersects with the Alligator Creek Falls trail, 15 minutes’ walk from the campground. From there it’s a quick on trail walk back to the starting point.
The terrain will be a mixture of the usual – grassy, scrubby and bushy sections including moderately steep inclines and declines.
There’ll be some rock hopping involved however the Cockatoo creek line is only moderately steep on the decline and will not require diversions. Some of the terrain is loose underfoot. Most of this hike is on a trail I have previously cut and marked.
This hike will involve a mixture of on & off trail hiking & rock hopping down Cockatoo Creek.
