SAFE STREETS FOR WALKING NOW

Queensland Walking Alliance
Road and roadside safety: Call to Action - Summary

Walking is for everyone.

We all enjoy a good walk, roll and stroll whether for leisure or commuting. It’s important to help all Queenslanders have access to comfortable, convenient and safe spaces for walking, and responsible driving.

Prioritising places where we walk.

  • All injuries and deaths of people walking are preventable

  • All members of the community deserve to be able to walk, roll, stroll in their local areas

  • Safer streets will reduce the risk of road trauma and near-hits and will encourage more people to walk every day.

The Queensland Walking Alliance road & roadside safety vision is:

  • for a Queensland that is walkable, rollable and strollable for all Queenslanders
  • for a Queensland where walking every day for purpose and pleasure is a first option and a valued choice
  • for all walkers’ needs and concerns to be heard, prioritised and respected in the mix of transport options
  • where walkers can take comfort in having space to walk freely without fear or risk of injury or death.

PRIORITISING PEOPLE WHO WALK

We call for the use of the Sustainable Transport Hierarchy to inform transport decisions.

We encourage a ‘Safe Systems’ approach and ‘Movement and Place’ methodology to be embedded in all planning, design, maintenance and budgetary decision-making processes for roads and roadsides.
We can provide safe places for walking in Queensland which will benefit all road users.

CALL TO ACTION

So that all Queenslanders can comfortably walk, roll and stroll every day without fear of death or injury, our direct call to action recommends:
  • Prioritise safer speeds

  • Prioritise walking through funding, policy and actions

  • Adopt Movement & Place methodology

  • Apply Safe Systems to all projects and funding

  • Enforce Road Rules and standards

  • Measure pedestrian crashes, trips, falls and near-hit risks.
  • Develop a Raised Priority Crossing program

  • Prioritise slip lane removals

  • Assess signalised intersections

  • Employ continuous raised paths

  • Enhance pedestrian priority and safety at roundabouts through signalisation or installing raised priority crossings

  • Reconsider pedestrian refuges as the only option of crossing

  • Better education of Road Rules and safe driving near people walking and crossing.
  • Expand the funding and scope of the walking local government grants program

  • Prioritise clear pathways, no hazards on paths at any time

  • Provide separation of pathway users.
