Understanding the rules when turning into a side street

Kids love walking to school. It’s good for their physical and mental health, and it helps build a sense of independence.

We’ve been working with Queensland school kids and drivers to bring awareness to some key Queensland road rules, so that kids can travel safely to and from school with confidence.

Do you know the rules?

Drivers

As a driver in Queensland when turning into a side road you must give way to pedestrians, bicycles and personal mobility devices.

It’s the law.

SLOW

STOP,  and WAVE when it’s safe to cross

WAIT for the road to be clear before moving forward to turn.

Pedestrians

As a pedestrian, cyclist, or rider of a mobility device, you have right of way but you’re still vulnerable.

STOP one step back from the kerb or shoulder of the road if there is no footpath.

LOOK and LISTEN in all directions for approaching traffic.

THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road.

Just remember, kids are still learning the road rules, and it is our job to drive safely and carefully and follow the road rules when turning into side roads or streets.
