We represent walking for all Queenslanders

Queensland Walks' Safer Active Schools pilot project concept

Kids walking to school

Why does this matter?

  • Drivers have the biggest role: Slow down near schools, follow the road rules, watch for crossings, and give kids space and expect the unexpected.
  • Safety first: Children deserve safe crossings, clear footpaths, and routes free from danger.
  • Active travel for health: Walking to school builds healthy habits for life.
  • Community connection: When schools are walkable, everyone benefits, including families, neighbours, and local businesses.

We’re working with schools, councils, and communities to pilot practical solutions such as suitable crossings, road rules reminders, improved signage, and education programs that remind drivers that keeping kids safe starts with drivers being careful behind the wheel.

Safer active streets for kids: starts behind the wheel and ends with a community that puts children first.

Safer Active Schools: Keeping kids safe starts with us

Queensland Walks is proud to introduce the Safer Active Schools pilot project concept, building on our commitment to safer, more connected communities. This initiative helps Queensland schools create environments where walking and active travel are the easiest, safest choices for students and families.

Bringing Queensland Walks’ Kids Walk concept through our previous campaigns called “How Are You Travelling?”, which encouraged Queenslanders to think about their travel habits to school, and “See It From The Other Side”, which reminded everyone to share the road responsibly, Safer Active Schools focuses on education, empathy, awareness, and action from all road users. The pilot program introduces school and ‘children-led’ Q-Walkshops (Queensland Walks walking workshops) to help identify higher risk locations and to emphasise infrastructure and educational opportunities.

Why does State Government infrastructure investment like SATIP and STIP program funding matter?

The School Active Travel Infrastructure Pilot (SATIP) and School Transport Infrastructure Program (STIP) provide critical investment in safer crossings, footpaths, and traffic calming measures around schools. These programs ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with community needs, reducing risk for children and families. Without this funding, schools are left with unsafe routes that discourage walking and increase car congestion, putting kids at greater risk.

SATIP and STIP make it possible for councils and schools to deliver real, lasting safety improvements.
