Safer Active Schools
Supporting safer walking and active travel to school across Queensland
Queensland Walks is working with schools, organisations and community partners across Queensland to support safer walking and active travel to school. Â
Safer Active Schools will help develop road safety education messages, campaign materials and toolkit resources that schools and communities can use to support safer school travel.
This project is funded through the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads Community Road Safety Grants scheme.
Safer Active Schools campaign
Many Queensland schools face challenges around school travel, including traffic congestion, driver behaviour, parking issues, road safety concerns, and barriers to walking, riding, scooting and using public transport.
The Safer Active Schools project aims to better understand these issues and develop practical resources that can support schools and school communities.
The project will explore:
- how students currently travel to and from school
- what helps or prevents safer walking and active travel
- what road safety messages are most useful for schools
- what resources schools need to support behaviour change
- how schools, communities and partners can work together to improve safety around schools
The project also considers accessibility, including how students, families, staff and visitors of all ages and abilities can safely access school grounds and nearby streets.

Queensland Walks is keen to work with schools, parents, carers, P&Cs, local governments, community organisations and road safety partners to support safer school travel across Queensland.

Survey 1 asks about your school context, how students currently travel to and from school, and what road safety education, campaign messages and toolkit resources would be most useful.

Survey 2 will ask more detailed questions about road safety issues around schools, active travel barriers, vehicle management, infrastructure needs and advocacy priorities.

Queensland Walks’ See it from the Other Side campaign worked with school children and drivers to raise awareness of key Queensland road rules so children can travel safely to and from school with confidence.
