We represent walking for all Queenslanders

A week without driving (or more)

Join us for a week without driving

Monday, September 29 – Sunday, October 5, 2025

Could you go for a week without driving? Maybe you already do!

Some of us jump in the car without a second thought,  even for short trips to the shops, school or the park. But what if, just for one week, you chose not to drive? At Queensland Walks, we think every Queenslander should try it at least once. Here’s why.

1. Save money

No petrol, no parking fees, no wear and tear on the car. A week without driving shows how much those “little trips” really cost.

2. Discover your neighbourhood

Walking allows you to see your community in a whole new way. You’ll notice hidden paths, local cafés, street art, and green spaces you’d normally speed past behind the wheel.

3. Feel healthier and happier

Just 30 minutes of walking a day boosts your mood, clears your head and keeps you active. By swapping even a few car trips for walking, you’ll clock up those minutes effortlessly.

4. Connect with people

When you walk, you’re part of your neighbourhood. You’ll wave to neighbours, stop for a chat, or simply feel more connected to your community.

5. See what’s missing

Going car-free even for a short time highlights where walking could be made easier: missing or disconnected footpaths and kerb ramps, unsuitable crossings, or streets where vehicles dominates. By noticing these gaps, you become part of the conversation for safer, more walkable and rideable places.

Give it a try

A week without driving isn’t about giving up your car. It’s about rediscovering what’s possible on foot, supporting healthier habits, and imagining Queensland communities where walking is the easiest, safest and most enjoyable choice.

So why not give it a go? Park the car for a week, pull on your walking shoes, and see where your feet can take you.
