Soft Hiking: Embracing Nature’s Gentle Call

What is the new ‘Soft Hiking’ Tik Tok trend?

While adrenaline-pumping adventures like extreme hiking and rock climbing are popular in Queensland, there’s a quieter, more serene approach to exploring the region’s breathtaking landscapes: soft hiking.

Soft hiking, also known as gentle hiking or easy hiking, offers a wonderful opportunity for both nature enthusiasts and casual explorers to immerse themselves in Queensland’s wilderness at their own pace. Created by the Soft Girls Who Hike, Lucy Hird and Emily Thornton, they felt that they couldn’t keep up with some hikers. They felt, that ‘they weren’t good enough, or fit or strong enough to keep up’. Thus ‘soft hiking’ was born.

Soft hiking is a more inclusive approach to walking, and is all about savouring the journey rather than conquering extreme challenges. Soft hiking is a great activity for families, seniors, or anyone seeking a peaceful escape into nature without demanding rigorous physical exertion. Queensland’s diverse landscapes offer plenty of soft hiking trails, making it accessible for hikers of all ages and fitness levels.

One of the best features of soft hiking in Queensland is the abundance of national parks and nature reserves. Lamington National Park, Tamborine National Park, and the Great Sandy National Park are just a few examples of places that offer an array of gentle walking trails. These trails wind through rainforests, past cascading waterfalls, and reveal panoramic vistas that will leave you awe-inspired.

Our lush subtropical climate in the south, and tropical climate in our northern parts means you can soft hike pretty much all year-round. While summer temperatures can be warm, hiking among the tall trees and shaded paths provides a refreshing escape from the heat. In the cooler months, the crisp air adds to the invigorating experience of connecting with nature.

Soft hiking can also be a social activity, offering the perfect setting for quality time with loved ones or meeting like-minded explorers along the way. Pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, or join a guided soft hiking tour to gain deeper insights into the area’s ecology and history.

Soft hiking is a wonderful way to embrace the wonders of nature without pushing yourself to the limits. Of course, you’ll still need to come prepared. Essential items include comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and plenty of water.
