Queensland Walks attended an inspiring morning for the Australian launch of “A Week Without Driving”, held in Morayfields on Wednesday morning. Organiser, Wendy Nash from getaroundcabocarfree.com.au spoke about the 40% of residents in Caboolture that don’t drive. Wendy emphasised the importance of advocating for safe places to walk, roll and stroll so that people could meet their basic needs.
A Week Without Driving is designed to raise awareness about the importance of investing in good infrastructure for essential forms of transport like walking and riding through awareness raising. Whilst in the midst of an election campaign, State MP for Morayfields and Police Minister, Mark Ryan, committed to a day without driving, raising his own awareness of bus timetables, walking routes, and the time-management challenges of getting to appointments without a car.
Local residents, Chris Carnell and Rachael Aberdein spoke about their experiences of living in Morayfields without driving. Chris spoke about how shocked she was by the impact that not being able to drive had on her mental health whilst waiting for a hip replacement. “I consider myself a really strong person, not driving took my independence away, it also took my dignity away”. Walking to public transport was not an option for Chris or Rachael as uneven pathways increased pain and created challenges to maintaining balance. Walking on roadways wasn’t an option due to vehicle speed.
The morning ended on a lovely, positive note with Rachael sharing a beautiful story about how walking throughout the local area inspires her musical and artistic talents.
Walking is the only form of transport for many. Walkability changes lives.
