Connecting Redland’s

In the first week of Queensland Walks month we conducted an insightful WALKshop (a combination of walking and workshopping) with the participation of residents Julie and Jeff Brown, Councillor Peter Mitchell, led by Anna Campbell and Fiona Coppin from Queensland Walks. The session focused on enhancing walkway connectivity for residents in high-density housing areas around Toondah Harbour, Cleveland, particularly the routes linking the ferry terminal, bus stop, Redlands RSL, and local cafes.

Key discussions during the walking survey addressed critical issues such as safe road crossings, traffic speeds, and the challenges posed by high-density traffic. The group explored the need for raised or wombat crossings to slow down vehicles, increase driver awareness, and minimize trip hazards.

Julie and Jeffrey both shared their perspectives on the significant impact that safe and accessible walkways would have on their lives and those of other residents. They emphasised that the ability to confidently and safely walk to public transport and social gatherings within their community would greatly enhance their social, physical and mental health and wellbeing.

The survey also underscored the specific challenges faced by residents with visual impairments, as highlighted by Julie’s experience. Hazards such as hip-height overhangs from ute trays and single-stand signs that are not detectable by a cane were identified as significant risks. Additionally, the silent approach of electric vehicles poses a growing concern for path users. Marking and raising surfaces at the intersections of pathways and carparks could raise awareness for both walkers and drivers.

Queensland Walks appreciates the hard work that Councillor Peter Mitchell is doing as he champions for liveable communities through active transport. Thank you also to Julie and Jeff Brown for raising awareness of the need to improve the connectivity of their community so everyone can walk, everywhere, anytime regardless of age or ability.
