An update from Greg Vann
We wish to update our supporters and collaborators that the Department of Transport and Main Roads has recently advised that our funding via the Walking Strategy will not be continued from 2026.
While this is obviously disappointing, we appreciate that the Department has to balance many competing funding requests and sometimes difficult decisions need to be made. We’d like to thank the Department for past funding and the many staff we work with there for their expertise, support and understanding, and commitment to our shared goals.
As we look ahead to 2032, we recognise the significant demands that face the state government. While this change in funding poses new challenges for our current operations of Queensland Walks, our projects, and future planning, it also presents an opportunity for us to continue to innovate on matters like our operations and funding sources.
The Queensland Walks Board and staff are actively assessing the situation to develop a strategy for the most effective path forward to continue to broaden our funding, as we have done in recent years, by seeking new opportunities to support our vision for a walkable Queensland for the future. Our priority is to minimise disruption wherever possible and to keep everyone informed as decisions are made.
We know that walking infrastructure and pedestrian advocacy has never been more important with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032, and with pedestrian fatalities and injuries continuing to increase. Over the coming weeks, we will be reviewing all activities to identify where adjustments will be required. We invite you to reach out to Queensland Walks with any questions or suggestions.
We appreciate your dedication, resilience and the thoughtful decisions that lie ahead as we prepare for the demands of 2032.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Kind regards,
Greg Vann
