Democracy Manifest: the historic underbelly of transport, crime and design in Fortitude Valley
Step into one of Brisbane’s most unexpected moments of cultural history. Led by historian Robert Allen, Queensland Walks and Brisbane Living Heritage, this guided walking tour examines the real‑world setting of the 1991 “Democracy Manifest” arrest through the lens of transport and urban design. What began as a police incident became enduring cultural folklore, shaped as much by place and movement networks as by people.
Walking through Fortitude Valley ( The Valley), the tour explores how streets, service lanes, building frontages and transport corridors create spaces of interaction, control and visibility. The tour offers insight into how everyday people, their movement networks and supporting infrastructure influence behaviour, public encounters, and the stories that shape our cities. Come and learn about some the Valley’s schemers, dreamers, rogues and quiet achievers and the places they created.
