Men’s Walk and Talk: The power of human connection

Mental health challenges continue to affect millions of men worldwide, and Queensland is no exception. The pressure to conform to societal expectations, financial stress, relationship issues, and other life stresses mean that at some stage, 1 in 7 men will suffer depression and 1 in five will experience anxiety.

Men’s Walk n Talk was established to offer a safe space for men to come together and share their experiences without fear of judgment. The Brisbane group was started by Mitchell Rowing and Jeff Kruger as a vehicle for challenging stigmas and building connection.

“Walking side by side, shoulder to shoulder, participants find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their struggles. Our walks foster a sense of camaraderie and support, nurturing bonds that extend beyond the trails.”

Walks are organised across various locations, providing an opportunity to connect with nature and engage in uplifting conversations with like-minded individuals. The organisation recently clocked up an impressive 100 walks, with more than 130 attending.

And the sense of camaraderie and support extends beyond the trails. Mitch and Jeff have added workshops, boxing, mental health classes and guest speakers to the schedule.

“The power of human connection in combating mental health issues cannot be overstated” says Mitch. “The healing power of walking, combined with the strength of community and communication, offers a beacon of hope for men facing mental health challenges and encourages them to walk towards a brighter and more fulfilling future.”
