Queensland Walks Month 2023 FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Queensland Walks Month is a celebration of walking, with a special theme of ‘Walk Explore’ in August 2023. You can walk, roll, run or stroll explore your local neighbourhood, connect to public transport or the closest hike, or visit some of the best places that Queensland has on offer!

How can I get involved?

  • Queensland Walks Month is free. No registration is required. You do not need to fundraise. Anyone can participate. 
  • You can participate by yourself or with your team, workplace, walking, rolling, strolling or running groups, or even get a neighbourhood group involved. The more the merrier. 
  • Help promote Queensland Walks by sharing the campaign on socials, encourage friends to get involved, use our hashtags: #QLDWalksMonth #QLDWalks #WeWalkQLD
  • You can download social tiles and other assets from our page to help promote
  • Take photos of where you walk and share them on our webpage by uploading on the Queensland Walks Month website. Go into the running for a prize
  • What’s on your walking ‘bucket list’, share it with us! Go into the running for a prize
  • Make a short 10 second walking video and upload it on the Queensland Walks Month website. Go into the running for a prize

Queensland Walks Month is made possible through Queensland Government funding, and we receive in kind support from 10,000 Steps, Bushwalking Queensland, and Heart Foundation, the Queensland Walking Alliance as well as from local and state government and volunteer community members and organisations. 

No, you don’t need to complete a set number of steps, minutes or kilometres to be part of the week! Whilst we encourage you to aim for 10,000 Steps per day or at least 30 mins of walking, Queensland Walks Month is about celebrating walking, encouraging you to notice your walking environment, and discover ways that we can improve the conditions for walking.

The benefits of Queensland Walks Month is sharing your experience via our website or on socials. 

Up for a challenge? We do recommend that you participate into the Walk Explore 10,000 Steps Challenge

No! You will upload photos, video and/or your bucket list individually, or as a group. One person (individually or on behalf of a group) can win the prize available. 

No you don’t have to submit any of your walks, however if you would like to be eligible for prizes, you will need to follow our competition Terms and Conditions. See further instructions on how to submit or upload below.

Option 2 – Submit our ‘bucket list’ of your walks for the month 

Option 3 – Upload your video on our website. 

  • Make a short 10 second walking video and upload it on the Queensland Walks Month website. Go into the running for a prize

  • Take a photo of anything relating to walking, rolling and strolling and the ‘walk explore them! 
  • Make sure that you have permission to photograph or record the people or the place (if a sensitive location). 
  • Did you know that it is the Year of Accessible Tourism? We’d love to see photos of accessible trails and paths (hint hint)!
  • We encourage you to find the traditional name of the area you are walking. 

Queensland Walks Month is designed to improve the health of Queenslanders by encouraging walking every day, promote better walking environments for all and connect the wider Queensland walking community. Queensland Walks Month has a focus on walking for transport, recreation, health, tourism and community connection as well as a call to action in support of more walkable spaces and places in our local communities.

Queensland Walks Month is a free, state-wide, community-based initiative for every body and every place. Anyone can get involved and.  All participants are eligible for a range of fantastic prizes (see terms and conditions).

Queensland Walks staff and Board members are not eligible for prizes. 

Yes, you can. The winning team in 2020 generously donated their winnings to Rosie’s street van in 2020! If you are one of the lucky prize winners, you are welcome to discuss how this might work. The design of the catered lunch is to support local hospitality that may have been negatively impacted over the last year. By supporting local, you are also helping improve the walkability of your local neighbourhood.

 Queensland Walks Month is hosted by Queensland Walks and supported by the Queensland Government, 10,000 Steps, Heart Foundation Walking and Bushwalking Queensland. 

Queensland Walks is a community based membership organisation. We advocate for more walkable places for all ages and all abilities so that more Queenslanders will walk every day.

Our aim is to improve the conditions and profile of walking in Queensland. We support and encourage government, organisations and agencies to improve policy and funding priorities to enhance walking.
