Welcome to walking, running rolling and strolling in Queensland in 2025. It has been a hot and wet start to the year for walking. Whether you’re walking to the shops or work, walking to the bus or enjoying a beach or bushwalk, there’s no doubt that a tree or a structural shelter is a walkers’ best friend on hot and wet days. With multiple Extreme Heat alerts already this year, we know that designing shade into every street and every project will be the greatest legacy for Queenslanders.
A new bridge with shading
We’ve been incredibly excited to see both the Neville Bonner pedestrian bridge and Kangaroo Point Bridge both featuring shade and weather protection. We’re not surprised that people are flocking to walk across the bridges.
“There have been 315,390 walking and riding trips across Brisbane’s newest bridge, the Kangaroo Point Bridge, since it opened on December 15 – an average of 10,876 per day.” writes Brisbane Times journalist Felicity Caldwell.
This wonderful legacy for Queensland, will provide many benefits to all Queenslanders – with tourists staying longer in Queensland, and planning trips to other parts of Queensland to see so many other places to walk.

We’re proud to have submitted a response to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority giving recommendations on the 100 Day Review:
- Universal design: accessible and inclusive pathways
- The value of spaces between venues and prioritising walkability
- Green grids and cooling our streets and the places where we walk and wait – aka Green Pathways Gold Places!
- Ensuring a regional focus for the Games, which includes investment in other parts of Queensland that help local residents and tourists to walk more.
Road safety for walking
In 2024 we shared our concerns at roundtables, in submissions, with media and meetings and just about anywhere we could – about the increase in injuries and very sad deaths of people walking, rolling and strolling.
Our calls to prioritise the safety of pedestrians were not alarmist, and sadly our concerns have been reflected in the road toll. Queensland Police Service Road Policing and Regional Support Command, Acting Chief Superintendent Garrath Channells made the following statement:

“In 2024, pedestrian deaths more than doubled and motorcycle fatalities rose to 79 and e-scooter related deaths quadrupled.
These numbers are tragic. They represent loved ones.”

Through our work with the Queensland Walking Alliance, we released the ‘Safer Roads Now’ Call to Action. We encourage you to read through the document, to share it with your family and friends, and to make a phone call to your Federal or State Member of Parliament or your local Councillor asking for Safer Active Streets, Safer crossings, and Connected, safe and hazard-free paths.
We recommend up to date training for our engineers and planners, especially identifying locations where we should include Raised Priority Crossings. Read more here.
We hope that you have walking at the top of your list for 2025, we’ve got some great ideas in our upcoming events page, and don’t forget to do a Walk My Street check to help us identify where our advocacy is needed.
